A Soulful Afternoon with Joe Waters, Andy Holquist, and DJ Kai Turner

Blues Spruce Series at KFFR’s Sound of Grand County Stage

On June 27th, the KFFR 88.3FM studio transformed into something truly special: a front-row seat to the blues.

As part of our Blue Spruce Members-Only concert series, we welcomed Joe Waters, the 2024 International Blues Challenge award-winner, for a live performance that was both powerful and deeply personal. Accompanying him was Andy Holquist, his longtime bassist and friend, whose playing brought depth and warmth to every note.

The afternoon was guided by DJ Kai Turner, host of Strictly Blues and a walking encyclopedia of blues history. Kai not only MC’d the event but led a rich, engaging conversation with Joe that touched on the artist’s Kentucky roots, the emotional landscape of his songwriting, and the artists and experiences that have shaped his musical journey.

Throughout the set, Joe and Andy filled the room with raw, expressive performances that reminded us why live music matters—and why community radio is the perfect stage for it. Between songs, Kai’s thoughtful questions brought out stories that connected the music to the man behind it, allowing listeners to experience both the artistry and the person with clarity and heart.

This kind of event—intimate, genuine, and deeply local—is exactly what the Blue Spruce series is all about. It’s a chance to gather in the same room, hear the crack of guitar strings up close, and share space with the artists who shape our soundscape.
