2024 Election Forum

Written by on November 3, 2023

KFFR strives to provide content that creates a more informed citizenry in Grand County.  So on October 18, we invited a few local leaders to come and speak about their ideas regarding the ballot issues up for vote in the November Election.  We started with Colorado State Issues HH and II, and then moved to county issue 1A followed by the town of Winter Park issue 2A, and ending with issue 2B for the town of Fraser.   All Grand County voters will see the state and county issues on their ballot.  However, voters must reside in the town corresponding to the issue in order to vote on that measure.

Each speaker will had two minutes to state their position on the different issues.

Issue HH is a measure that will enact changes to state property taxes and revenue limitations, including reducing property tax rates and allowing the state government to retain revenue that would otherwise be required to be reimbursed under TABOR

Issue II will allow the state government to retain and spend surplus revenue obtained from the higher taxes on cigarettes, tobacco, and nicotine products.

Shanna Ganne discussed both of these issues.

County issue 1A is related to the Open Lands Rivers and Trails advisory committee.  Meara McQuain from the Headwaters Trail Alliance spoke in favor of this issue.

Town of Winter Park issue 2A is asking for an increase in the lodging tax in Winter Park to fund Early Childhood Education and Affordable Housing

Catherine Ross, the Executive Director of the Winter Park and Fraser Chamber of Commerce endorsed this issue.

Finally, the Town of Fraser is proposing a land exchange in issue 2B.

Steve Fitzgerald is the Executive Director for the Fraser Arts Committee spoke in favor of the issue and Barry Young, co-owner of Fraser Valley Distilling, was opposed.

The November election will be on Tuesday, November 7th.  Ballots have been mailed and can be dropped off at any of the drop box locations in the county or via US mail service.
